Mini Symposium on Computational Mass Migrations

Body

Mass migrations are one of the main societal challenges in the last decade. Europe, Central America and South America are witnessing the displacement of millions of people at an unprecedented speed and scale. To harness the positive effects of migrations for both migrants and host communities, new tools and frameworks need to be developed to understand the processes of spatial displacement, social and economic integration.

In this mini-symposium and discussion, we bring together experts from academia, the tech sector, and intergovernmental organizations to foster discussion about the needs and possibilities of each actor. After this discussion we’ll be able to better understand the gaps and opportunities in this emergent field.

We are interested in discussion regarding the following questions:

  1. How can Big Data help us to understand migration trends?
  2. What can data teach us about the integration of migrants into new areas?
  3. Which novel data sources need to be designed and implemented to better assess migrant populations and their impact on host communities?
  4. What are the opportunities for the private/startup sector and academia to collaborate to address the challenge of mass migration in an agile and efficient manner?
